Cell biology is the sub-discipline of biology that studies the basic unit of life, the cell. It deals with all aspects of the cell including cell anatomy, cell division and cell processes such as cellular respiration and cell death.

Cell biology does not stand alone as a discipline but is closely related to other areas of biology such as genetics, molecular biology and biochemistry.

In this course, we will investigate the structural organization of cells and examine how these structures are used to accomplish the myriad tasks that they perform. Several animations/ simulations will be incorporated to help students develop a three-dimensional visualization of some of these processes.

We will also touch upon more complex subjects such as DNA and RNA; protein structures and synthesis before delving into some of the deeper molecular biological issues, including the formation of cancerous cells, and the facts behind the controversial issue of stem cell research. The course will culminate in an overview of the currently used cell and molecular biology techniques.

On completion of this course the student would have acquired an understanding in key aspects of cell biology which will be beneficial especially in biomedical related professions.
