Through a combination of lectures, interactive discussions, group and individual learning experiences students will examine the foundations of language and literacy development in the early childhood years (birth to five years). This course will focus on emergent literacy behaviours that are pre-cursors to conventional literacy and the strategies that teachers must engage to support young language and literacy learners.  Included will be critical explorations of the philosophical and theoretical foundations of effective language and literacy instruction in the early childhood years, instructional strategies and supportive literacy environments, and assessment strategies to support successful early language and literacy learning.

The course is delivered online, but employs a pedagogical approach in the delivery of Voice-over PowerPoint Presentation, because of the nature of the learners enrolled in the Early Childhood Care and Education programme.
